Statement on Business Tax Reform Framework
From Ashley Henry, Chief Collaboration Officer, Business For A Better Portland
Business For A Better Portland was founded on the belief that in order for our businesses to thrive, the community as a whole must thrive. There is no question that the State of Oregon needs more revenue to deliver education and basic human services. Healthy businesses are born from a healthy community. It’s in the best interest of the business community to take a solutions-oriented, collaborative approach with our legislative leaders to create a path forward.
As a very new organization, we haven’t been able to survey our diverse membership on specific proposals brought forward by legislative leadership. However, we know with certainty the position articulated by Brighter Oregon (The Oregon Business Plan Coalition) which essentially asks legislators to delay addressing this fundamental challenge, does not reflect the conversations we are having with our members. Our members want to engage in a cooperative, nuanced, inclusive, and data-driven approach. In addition to being business owners and investors, our members are also parents of public school students and citizens who recognize the need for important social services for Oregonians.
From our vantage point, it seems that the Governor and Legislature are making progress on cost containment concerns that some members of the business community called for. While we cannot endorse a specific Legislative proposal at this time, we caution the legislature against assuming that the Brighter Oregon position is reflective of the broader business community’s position.
