Call to Action: Street Roots Supply Kit Project

BBPDX members care deeply about the communities in which we live and work. We’re committed to addressing the root causes of homelessness to ensure a thriving Portland.

As we continue our work on policies and programs to address those root causes, we also challenge our members to find ways to provide comfort and support to those currently living outside.  Below you’ll read about a unique way our member companies can engage this year -- and no need to wait until the holidays.

We’re excited to invite BBPDX members to participate in the Street Roots Supply Kit Project where BBPDX member businesses and their employees create supply kits for the hard working Street Roots vendors who write, edit, publish, and sell this important local media source.

Last year, inspired by the vision of Cloudability CEO Mat Ellis, over a dozen companies hosted Kit Parties in their offices. Together, the BBPDX community provided 175 kits containing items specifically requested by Street Roots’ vendors such as gift cards for coffee and a haircut and movie tickets plus a few extras: hand warmers, gloves, winter hats, warm socks, notebooks and pens, all packed inside a reusable string backpack. BBPDX and Street Roots staff attended these office gatherings and provided a very short program about homelessness in our community and how businesses can help address the crisis.

“I really liked the journal. I actually liked all of it. It was special to get a present that was just meant for us.

- Angie, Street Roots vendor

The Supply Kit Parties will be a little different this year - here’s how we’re changing it up and making it easier for your company to be involved:

If you participated in 2017, you’ll see that we’re approaching the project differently this year in light of BBPDX’s limited staff capacity. We will not be procuring the items to a centralized location. Rather, kit party hosts are responsible for ordering and paying for the kit supplies.

Each member company that signs up to participate will commit to assembling a specific number of kits by December 15th and will be responsible for procuring required items on the Supply Kit Checklist in time to include them in the kits. BBPDX has obtained additional donated items that will be delivered to you prior to your Kit Party so that you can include these items in each of the Supply Kits you create. These special items are also listed on the Supply Kit Checklist. Once you’ve submitted your Supply Kit Project Party date we’ll get those items to you in plenty of time.

It’s easy to get started:

  1. Sign your company up to participate.

  2. Invite your team to join the project! (Invite employees [and their families!] to join in this special opportunity to celebrate the holidays together by giving back.)

  3. Begin procuring necessary items from the Supply Kit Checklist (Please be sure to order early so you have enough time to include the items in the supply kits.)

  4. Coordinate with us on the date for your company Kit Party. (Last year, BBPDX and Street Roots staff provided a short introduction at each party look forward to joining you again this season!)

  5. Coordinate receipt of special items procured by BBPDX (BBPDX has procured special additional items to include in the supply kits, they will be prepared for you to pick up at BBPDX. Very special thanks to the following companies for donating and/or sponsoring special items for the Street Roots Vendor Supply Kits this year! Zapproved, TriMet, Doc Martens, Scout Books, and Bishops)

  6. Host your company’s kit party!

If you are unable to host a kit party but want to support the project with a tax-deductible donation, please click here. Donated funds will be used to help us purchase additional special items for the Supply Kit Project.

“I liked the gift card for a haircut. Honestly, I needed a haircut so bad. I really appreciated it – getting a haircut was the first thing I did after getting my kit.”

- Chris, Street Roots vendor

BBPDX has committed to creating 200 kits for Street Roots vendors by December 15th. Our goal is to see 5 member companies get involved and commit to completing at least 40 kits each.

If you are unable to host a kit party but want to support the project with a tax-deductible donation, please click here. Donated funds will be used to help us purchase additional special items for the Supply Kit Project.
